How I found me again after domestic abuse.

During the last couple of years that I spent with ‘him’ I knew something was very wrong. But abuse? No way was I being abused. I wasn’t ‘one of those…

Of course I’m not ‘one of those women’.

Healing from domestic abuse is a very personal journey that requires education, resilience and tons of support. Here are just some of the steps I took to reclaim my life.

  • Seek professional help – can be easier said than done.
  • Read it all, watch it all and listen to it all.
  • Write it all down.
  • Join support groups, find a hobby, talk to people.
  • Practice self-care – in the early days that could be just brushing your hair now and then!
  • Get up, get dressed and do something. Anything.
  • Fake it until you make it
  • Allow the emotions – cry, shout, grieve, rage.
